The Art of Not Reacting
Reaction is fast.
Peace is deliberate.
Most reactions happen before we even realize we have chosen them. A tone of voice, a look, a comment, an email—and suddenly the body tightens, the mind starts building a case, and we are off to the races.
We call this “being triggered.”
But what it really is… is momentum.
Old emotional energy looking for somewhere to go.
The art of not reacting is not about becoming passive, numb, or silent. It is about inserting a pause between what happens outside of us and what happens inside of us.
And that pause is where our freedom lives.
This is where the four phrases become powerful in real time:
I love you. I am sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.
We repeat them silently, not to fix the other person, but to soften our own internal surge. We clean the emotional charge before it turns into words we cannot take back.
Something subtle begins to happen when we practice this.
We notice the reaction rising… but we do not have to ride it.
We feel the urge to defend… but we do not have to follow it.
We sense the irritation forming… but we do not have to feed it.
Instead, we clean, we repeat ho'oponopono in the moment.
And from that cleaned space, we respond rather than react. We still speak, but calmly. We can still set boundaries or limits. But now our words come from clarity instead of from anger, frustration, or fear.
That is the difference between reacting and responding.
Reacting is automatic.
Responding is intentional.
Reacting creates more emotional residue.
Responding creates peace.
The art of not reacting is not about controlling the world around us. It is about tending to the world within us before it spills outward.
And the more we practice the words in those small, heated moments, the more we discover something beautiful:
We do not lose our power by not reacting.
We strengthen our power by responding.
